The photo shows the life-sized model of a 12-week-old fetus created using imaging from an ultrasound scan.
Brazilian student Jorge Lopes has pioneered the conversion of data from ultrasound and MRI scans into life-size plaster models of living embryos using a method called rapid prototyping.
‘It’s amazing to see the faces of the mothers. They can see the full scale of their baby, really understand the size of it,’ said Dr Lopes.

" Clearly, when an adult human being is asleep or in a coma, or suffering from dementia, he still is a person, even though he cannot immediately exercise mental functions, and even if he will never exercise such functions again. But so too with infants, fetuses and embryos. Because they are human beings they have radical natural capacities to exercise mental functions. It will take them some time to actualize those capacities, but they are identical to the entities that (unless prevented by natural calamity or deliberate human action) actively develop themselves to the stage of maturity where they exercise rational faculties and make free choices.

" When I withdrew the curette, I saw that it was plugged up with the leg of the baby which had been torn off. I then changed techniques and used ring forceps to dismember the 13 or 14 week size baby. Inside the remains of the rib cage I found a tiny, beating heart. I was finally able to remove the head and looked squarely into the face of a human being—a human being that I had just killed.
